Description

Miami, August 17, 2009  Whether singing in Spanish, English or Portuguese, Magos Herrera is credited as having one of the most beautiful voices of the contemporary Latin American jazz scene. She will enchant audiences in Miami on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. at the Colony Theater to mark the beginning of Miami Dade College’s acclaimed 2009-10 Cultura del Lobo Performing Series. The series runs through April 2010.

Born in Mexico City, Herrera blends classic jazz rhythms with Latin American melodies. Her repertoire is filled with the yearning, romance, intimacy and enchantment of Mexican and Cuban “sons” and “boleros,” and languid Brazilian beats.

Herrera’s career spans more than 20 years and includes six albums, the most recent, Distancia, was release this spring. She has two international compilations for Brazil and Japan, and is part of the acclaimed Mexican Divas CD series. In addition, Herrera produced and hosted two TV music shows for Mexico’s Channel 2.

The sultry singer/songwriter has performed internationally, including the Lincoln Center in New York, Millenium Park in Chicago, Knitting Factory and Jazz Standard in NYC, Teatro de la Ciudad de Mexico and Sala Galileo Galilei in Madrid, among many others. In 2006, she was nominated for a Lunas del Auditorio Nacional award for the best jazz concert.

The 2009-10 Cultura del Lobo Performance Series continues MDC's tradition of bringing the newest, most challenging, contemporary work to the community that explores both the uniqueness of different cultures and how they interact with one another. The Series is an MDC initiative through its Cultural Affairs Department. Cultura del Lobo (Culture of the Wolf) was originally conceived as a play on the name of the college's downtown Wolfson Campus and the adventurous spirit of its programs. Past performers include Branford Marsalis, Inbal Pinto Dance Company, Marc Bamuthi, McCoy Tyner, Paquito D'Rivera, and many other acclaimed artists. In addition, the artists have taught master classes.
