When you talk about Origen, you relate them with a magical ingredient of being right on the edge. They can relate to the alternative/indie scene, as well as the commercial pop,Latin media and that's a plus for a band that is fighting with all the tools to make it as an independent artist. We had the chance to talk with this Miami based band and learn about the origin of "Origen".
- Sometimes independent bands compare releasing albums to giving birth... how much did it hurt Origen to release your first production?
It was like giving birth and getting kicked on the nuts at the same time. Since we first got together it has been our dream to be able to record an album. It took about four years of rehearsals and playing live everywhere we could to get the attention of indie label Binary Star Music. Two great producers, Carlos De Yarza and Henry Otero, helped us in the process. The actual recording process took a whole year, but it was a great experience for us.
- How do you feel about the big changes in the music industry as an unsigned band?
The changes in the past 5-10 years have only helped us. Being signed to an indie label has major advantages. While the big labels are not investing in new talents, the market for independent and unsigned bands only gets bigger. People want to hear something fresh and unique.
- Origen been featured in important mainstream Hispanic media, how has that helped your band's fanbase?
It is a blessing to be able to say that we've gotten the attention of important hispanic media such as CNN En Español and Telemundo. They helped us to reach a broader audience and take our music further, however I think it is important to mention that outlets like Fabrika that are constantly supporting indie music and undiscovered bands help out as much as mainstream media. We are thankful to both for giving us the support in the past year with our album and two videos.
- The single "Coexiste" has a great video, why did you choose this song for a music video? Who produced it?
We choose “Coexiste” because of the strong tolerance message it promotes. Currently with all the wars, battles, and different hatred situations we are experiencing due to the existent lack of tolerance, we believe it’s time to unite and make a stand and change this route. No matter what is your religion, the color of your skin, sexual orientation, and political preference, we are all one and should act as one. This exactly what “Coexiste” means - to learn how to live in peace respecting each other, no matter if our beliefs do not concord. Agustin form AAA Production was our producer whom through his artistic eye and great talent was able to portray on the video the message we wanted to share.
- Miami seems to be cooking good bands lately, how do you fit into the Miami scene?
Miami is mother to awesome bands that posses great talent. This is greatly due to the different cultures living in this wonderful city. All bands here work hard and try by different means to expose their art, with the whole purpose of sharing their music with the fans. This is the way we fit into the scene, working on our music daily with the hope to reach the lives of many hoping to take part of their iPod downloads
- What are your expectations for this first album?
With this album we're looking to get our name out there, let people know what Origen is about through our music and lyrics. We'll continue to expand our fan base by exploring new markets for us within the U.S, Puerto Rico and Latin America, hopefully this first album will keep opening doors for Origen in the upcoming months and take us to the next level, so thank you very much everybody for the support by going to www.origenweb.com and getting your copy of the album!
- What's next for Origen?
The way we supported the album was mainly online, and through interviews. At this point we are currently planning a tour to support the album and Coexiste that should take us from Texas to California. We've gotten a great reception in the past from cities outside of Miami, like New York, Tampa, and LA where we opened for Camila. After we get back from the road we'll be hitting the studio and work on a follow up EP.
