Making Movies + Minimal live
November 5th @ Transit Lounge

1. Why the name Making Movies? How do you describe your sound as a band?
The name came from my dad’s music; one of his favorite bands is the Dire Straits. They had a record called Making Movies and I always thought it looked cool on a record cover. Actually an old Dire Straits song is the first memory I have, I was still in Panama and loved their song “The Walk of Life” even though I didn’t understand the words. I describe our sound as Afro-Cuban Indie Rock…ha. Um depends whom I’m talking to, if it’s a 40-year-old man I say we sound like Santana crossed with the Police. If I’m talking to a musician, I say something different.
2. You started doing music mostly in English, why do music “En Español”?
Spanish is my first language and I always had a few songs that came out in Spanish and some that came out in English. My life has always been in both languages so I started experimenting with translating the songs. Whenever possible we try to have a version in each language. It seems to make sense to me since so many people live with both languages on a daily basis.
3. As a Kansas City band singing “en Español” how easy/hard is it to fit in the local music scene?
We don’t fit in to any scene in the Midwest so we just make our own. That being said, the local media has been very supportive and we have a devoted following at home.
4. Your songs seem to mature by the minute. As a band, take us through your songwriting process?
I try to always write and when I bring the song to the band, I usually have a melody, chords and a groove in mind. From there we jam it out until it sounds like something. We have discovered that our best songs happen really fast, full arrangements done in 15-20 minutes.
5. You have played important shows with very cool people these past months (Aterciopelados, Pastilla, Montenegro, Minimal) How is the experience help you grow as artists?
I think playing with bands that you look up to helps inspire you to work harder. That is especially true after playing with those bad-ass dudes in Minimal.
6. Congrats on the “Libertad” video. Tell us about it.
Myspace Latino invited us to headline their En Tu Ciudad show in Chicago. We were honored especially since Chicago isn’t our hometown. They told me they would put the video on Myspace Latino’s front page if we could turn it in by Monday (it was Wednesday). I had some video footage of the band and in a couple of all night sessions made the video. It was seen over 16,000 times that first week. We are almost done with our record and will have some ‘official’ videos soon, but we were pretty proud of it especially since it was a homemade thing.
7. You teamed up with Miami’s own Minimal to work both scenes together releasing a FREE EP. Tell us how has that strategy worked for both bands?
It has been a great way to get our music exposed, the newspaper here in Kansas City loved the idea and put up a cool piece about it as well as other partners Remezcla, and Rockoleta namely. .
8. You have been here in Miami a couple of times now, how is Miami scene different than KC?
Oh man, it’s hard to find similarities. Kansas City has a very ‘indie rock’ hipster scene and almost no Latin music. Miami is mostly booty shaking music, I guess we land somewhere in between the two.
9. What’s next for the band? Projects/Tours
We have a record being mixed right now. We will put it out early next year and tour as much as possible. We can’t wait, it’s our debut.
