FabrikaLink had the opportunity of a Q&A session with Nicaragua's singer and songwriter sensation, Perrozompopo, who will be forming part of the Mira que Lindas! concert series on June 5th.

Nicaragua is mostly linked to the poetry of Ruben Dario, the gallo pinto and fried cheese, the rum of Flor de Caña, and even the Contra War.  Like elsewhere, this country has a long list of aspiring artists, and among them is Ramon Mejia, aka Perrozompopo.

After three albums, one of which was already reviewed on Fabrika, Perrozompopo is making his way to Miami for the first time.  We have been promoting this event for quite some time now and for the not-so-savvy, we bring you this interview to introduce you to the history and music of Perrozompo.

I'm not going to deny that going into an interview, I go into the butterflies-in-my-stomach and the sweaty palms mode.  Evidently, when Ramon Mejia answered the phone, those nerves left on their own.

How did you get into music? "I come from a Nicaraguan family where almost everyone is an artist, Los Mejia Godoy", Mejia stated.  "The artists with most exposure in Latin America and outside are my uncles Carlos and Luis Enrique" later adding that he is brothers with Grammy winner salsero, Luis Enrique.

Out of curiosity, why is your alias Perrozompopo? "They are albino lizards that are found inside the homes of Nicaragua, I figured it was a way for people to remember my music and work when they see one".  Joking around, Mejia stated that he was looking for something more cultural, something like "Carne Asada".

What's the objective of your music? Many Nicaraguans have their facts wrong when labeling Perrozompopo's music as political.  In fact, Mejia clarified that his music is generally about the Nicaraguan society and culture and not a specific ideology.  "I have a captivating audience that recognizes my work", Mejia stated, "I sing about Nicaragua's reality and that is what they embrace".

What do you expect from your first presentation in Miami? After three albums and representing Nicaragua in Europe and Latin America, this will be his first time visiting Miami. Mejia admitted to being "worried about how the audience might respond", his music is primarily about Nicaragua and he is aware that a vast amount of Nicaraguan's reside in this city.  This is also an opportunity to introduce his music to the culture diversity that penetrates the Miami scene.

Finalizing the interview, Perrozompopo sent out a special greeting to the readers of FabrikaLink: "I hope to see everyone at the concert to enjoy musica Nicaraguense".  This concluded the 15 minute interview with Perrozompopo.

Do not forget to catch Perrozompopo's first time presentation in Miami at the Mira Que Lindas! exhibition concert series on Saturday June 5 at 9PM in The Awarehouse (550 NW 29th ST) along with special guest DJ Le Spam. CLICK FOR MORE INFO >>
