About J. Tomás López:
J. Tomás López is a professor in the Department of Art and Art History. A renowned photographer, he has exhibited his works in museums and exhibitions around the world.
About the Lecture:
Since its inception in 1827 photography has functioned as a catalyst for change and revolution, not just in recording the world but also as a tool for many other disciplines. One could argue that photography was as dramatic a discovery for art, communication and science as the printing press. The printing press may have initially been conceived as a tool to facilitate the reproduction of manuscripts and bibles; what could not have been predicted was the effect it would have on the democratic distribution of ideas across social classes and borders, and how that exchange of information would change perceptions of the world.
Three aspects to the lecture include:
Processes and early photographers 1827-1880
Defining a language and usage 1890- 1950
Contemporary Photography–1950 to the present
