Throughout the years the genre "Rock en Espanol" has carried the connotation that the said genre's sound is that of a spunky latin beat with spanish lyrics, and a rock backbone. This is not the case with California-based Mexican rockers, Enjambre, their throwback sound is quite vintage inspired, and while they take cues from decades past, their latest album, Daltonico strikes a refreshing chord.
Upon playing the first track, "Cobarde," you automatically get ride back into the sepia-coloured 70's. At first I have to admit that I grew weary of the sounds, as it took me back to my childhood times listening to Jose Jose with my grandmother...yeah. However, my hope was regained with "Visita", a sweet song that takes proper cues from an old school inspiration, but still keeps the 5-young-guys feeling. "Madrugada" is probably the strongest song in the album. Sure the lyrics are a little love-desperate, but thats ok, the music suits it well with rock riffs that would make the Strokes proud. It transports you to a overcast filled day in Paris, where you're lost in your hopes of love.
One thing that I do have to point out, however, is that as you listen to the whole album you will get the feeling that it sounds like the same song, different words. Give it a chance, you'll notice an evolution of beats and melodies. Enjambre's sounds isn't some sort of "post-something" or "revival-another", it's simple yet pleasing, and you know what, they make it work.
