We've got something big brewing in the way of bass right here in Miami by the name of Caligula.

Local production duo Caligula is comprised of DJ Damaged Goods (Obi Tawil), who you know from killing the turntables as resident DJ at parties like Misfit Fridays at Louis, and studio production-savvy Mikey Millions (Mike Larson). The two have come together and formed a union headed by the Overthrow Music Authority and called it Caligula. For all the dubstep fans out there, if you don't know about them yet, you should. Having already established a name for themselves by doing official remixes for the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Hot Pink Delorean, Caligula also won the M.I.A. "Steppin Up" remix contest which earned them a trip to record in Red Bull Studios, LA.

All of that just served as the catalyst to take it to the next level by releasing their own original five-track EP, The Rise. Just released last week, along with the corresponding video for "Light In The Dark", The Rise is well on its way to just that. This EP proves that listening to five tracks back-to-back of dubstep can in fact be quite the enjoyable auditory journey. The first track, "The Rise", is gradual instrumental lead into the rest of the album that incorporates electronic elements. Following are tracks that continue along the electronic lines, with underlying hints of house to accent the heavy drum-and-bass vibes. Vocals are provided by songstresses Little Jinder and Meg Martin. Even hip-hop is incorporated on "Watch Out", with rapper J-NICS and an eerie little voice chiming in "Caligula" every so often-- catchy in an almost extra-terrestrial way. The Rise is a well-crafted album that, by using influences of other music genres, shows how dubstep has the ability to be a less-aggressive genre than most perceive. It makes tracks into songs, rather than just a non-stop headache, where listeners can differentiate between tunes.

As their debut, The Rise is sure to become popular among heavy dub-fans and newcomers alike. This is an album that's bass is not strictly reserved for the dancefloor, although it's bound to find its way there. Now sit back and let the bass fill your ears as we watch Caligula make their rise right here in Miami.
