Bocatabu is for many of us a new name, but for Dominican Republic it is one of the greatest pop-rock bands at the moment.
They are six young artists who came together in 2007. They mix elements of rock and pop and frequently experiment with the sounds of a classical violin. We could say that their sound is somewhat that of a more pop version of Chilean band “La Ley.” Their music sounds very much like the style of stereotypical Latin American pop-rock that at times gives off a tinge of a classical feel.
Bocatabu plays with romantic ideals such as letting go of the fear to express truth and love. Their lyrics talk about love and stories of the daily life. As their vocalist/composer- Giorgio Siladi states: “ If I had to define what we are, I would say that we are like dream connoisseurs. Looking for new stories to tell, in search of virgin stories.”
Their most known song is "Bang Bang", which became popular all over Dominican Republic and even became the #1 hit pop-rock song. It's a slow ballad, and while Nancy Sinatra's song of the same name is a slow-song classic, this "Bang Bang" makes me wonder how it reached such a popular level. However, it's probably the tender piano opening, the flowy acoustic guitar strings, and the chorus-like climax that made all the sappy-at-heart listeners fall in love with it. Personally, I think "La Via" is the better ballad. The violin and marching style drums give it a distinct feeling, and the vocal delivery is a lot more passionate, which is difficult to achieve in a genre that is plagued by cliches.
Overall, Bocatabu is alright. For someone whose taste is on the opposite end of the musical spectrum, I was able to get through all six tracks. Next time however, I'll probably have my ballad loving aunt in the car next to me.
