Boy, do I wish my name was Laura.
Diego Garcia is an Argentine descent artist who once led the New York-based garage band Elefant, but unfortunately that came to its end in 2010. Diego Garcia took the "solo project" road and released his debut solo album on April 5th via Nacional Records. Unlike his post-revival punk days, Garcia takes it down a notch by crooning not only fans, but a special someone in specific; Hence, the album is called "Laura."
As I mentioned, Garcia takes it down a notch and it can be heard from the first track to the last, where 30 minutes or so round up a neutral tempo and feel. The album consists of 9 songs that can vicariously take us on a journey through the love life of Diego Garcia and his wife, Laura. The couple met at the University, and later drifted apart, to only meet again in Rome, where the rest is history. A history Garcia is now sharing with many as a result of this ambrosial production.
If you are a fan of Elefant, you will definitely notice the change of genre with the first track "Inside My Heart." This opening track pretty much brings back the famous Latin musical period of the sixties, known as "La Epoca de Oro." The mixture of the tambourine, piano, and elegant string instruments gives credit to the big names of that era such as Sandro and Roberto Carlos. In fact, this whole album is inspired by romantic music of the sixties and seventies.
Like every relationship, you have your ups and downs, one of those down moments for Diego and Laura is heard in a catchy song called "Separate Lives," where the romantic crooner blames all mistakes on their separate lives. I specifically like this song because of the use of gracious flamenco guitar strokes and Spanish percussions.
It all comes to an end with "All Eyes on You," a mellow disco inspired track that pretty much sums up Garcia's love life. In my opinion, Diego Garcia's intent to bring back the epoca de oro is an admirable and brilliant idea, whether you agree or not; But, one thing is for sure, Laura is one lucky gal!
