Cults is an indie pop band signed to Lily Allen’s label, In the Name Of.

Their carefree flow and feel good 1960’s influenced sound is really all this duo wants
to represent them. Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin (I suspect these names may be
phony...) have only recently started making music together, shrouded in secrecy, while
studying film at NYU. They came to be known from their posts on Bandcamp, a music
promotion website.

I’ve made statements before about the cancerous role of the internet in the promotion
and representation of art and music in the 21 century. I think it is still too soon to judge
whether or not the ability to instantly present what you make to the world has a positive
or negative effect on artistic integrity and production. I believe it may be a double edged
sword. But who cares.

Cults is dancey, fun electro pop doing what it does. Follin’s vocals channel Lykke Li; a
little nasally, a little whiny, but penetrating and entrancing. Their fire starter and second
track, Go Outside, is kinda sucky and predictably the most popular song from the band.
My personal favorite track, You Know What I Mean, is like the Supreme’s Where Did
Our Love Go combined with a little Sinead O’Connor Nothing Compares to You.

I wouldn’t say Cults is brilliant, but definitely a band on the fast track. Keep an eye on
the speedometer and this duo.
