Protests, protests, and more protests, but first you have to dance!
Our friends at Nacional Records are on a roll, having recently released the album for an anticipating Venezuelan quartet. I heard these guys are very popular in their home town, especially since they lead a new movement of Venezuelan youth during this era of Hugo Chavez; In fact, their enormous fan base goes under the name of "La Resistance." La Vida Boheme, is a band from Caracas, Venezuela, who are elaborating their outlook on music, art, and a hint of politic issues via their debut LP "Nuestra."
"Not another punk band," (unless, you know, that's your thing) will probably cross your mind when you first hear La Vida Boheme. On the contrary, by the end of the 12 tracks you will realize that this is when South America meets the dance-punk of LCD Soundsytem, the punk-rock of The Clash, and the ska of La Maldita Vecindad with some other delightful musical influences thrown in there.
As mentioned before, La Vida Boheme express their thoughts and feelings on the current situation of their country, without ever so losing their passion of music and art. The raging guitar riffs, drum strokes, and playful whistling found in "El Buen Salvaje," the indie beats in "Huxley", and the accelerating digital haze pop in "I.P.O.S.T.E.L." are just a few examples! [FYI;http://www.ipostel.gob.ve/]. One of the things that calls out my attention the most is the lead singers voice; it's magical and pleasing to the ears. In the relaxing track "Flamingo," we can appreciate his beautiful talent. Their track "Nicaragua," brings out their essential post-punk flavors. This is my favorite track on the album because of it's demanding rhythms and the lyrics of pain, remorse, and comprehension that only countries in similar situations can express. This manifest dance party comes to an end with "Nuestra;" a clever combination of experimental, punk, and electro that will make you to dance to their last words:
"No muerde, no calla
Sin sangre no hay arte
Nada ni nadie
De nada más."
