If you ever needed an album to help you bask in your gloom, Apokalypsis is it.
I'd previously heard of Chelsea Wolfe in Stereogum's Tribute to Is This It. She had covered "The Modern Age," and the song's haunting gloom left me curious about this girl. It turns out that Chelsea Wolfe is originally from Sacramento but is based in sunny LA, so it makes me wonder how does she get inspiration for her music? The whole album is moody, somber, and haunting. Starting with the 25 second mood setting album opener "Primal Carnal" you're immediately taken into Chelsea's apocaliptic world. "Movie Screen" for example, makes you feel like your the last person in the world, left to pick up the pieces from the rubble. "Pale on Pale" has a more blues-y post Civil War feel, The Dead Weather probably wishes they had come up with this song. Then there's "Demons", the most upbeat song in the album. Taking cues from Sonic Youth, it feels like this is the song you'd drive to your impending doom. Apokalypsis does a job well done at wrapping you in it's shadow and not letting you until the end , at which point you might leave with chills down your spine.
