Hip-hop -and a everything else- done right.
If you're not familiar with Astronautalis, you better get on it now. The Jacksonville-born rapper has evolved from spitfire MC to hip-hop based genre-mixing artist. He's back with his 4th album, This is Our Science - a solid work of everything.
If the lyrics weren't strong enough, the instrumentation backs it up whether it be via the small detail of a hi-hat, a catchy synth loop, or soft piano melody. Yes there are some songs that stand out over others, but the album as a whole is so cohesive it boggles my mind how one track jumps from having a blunt and agressive delivery to a softer melody-driven song while still keeping a brilliant flow.
3 Songs Worth Listening:
- "The River, The Woods" - Simple, clean, yet packed with strength and simple drum work led by a hi-hat that makes his vocals stand out
- "Thomas Jefferson" (Ft. Sims & Mike Wiebe) - Organ, Hi-hat, snare, piano, wailing guitar, then his fast-paced vocal explosion filled with matter-of-factness agression.
- "Holy Water" - The one you'll be listening to over and over again. Kicks-off the cilmax to the album.
This album makes me want to: punch anyone that compares him to Marshall Mathers in the face.
