I've lost track of how many albums Bunbury has released as a solo artist; however, he knows how to keep it cool and classy in all of them.

The Zaragosa-based legendary rock master, Enrique Bunbury, has released a new album called Licenciado Cantinas.  If you are a Bunbury follower, you would know that each of his albums have a theme and beautiful concept behind them.  This album is just another one of the bunch with a new stories to tell and new sounds to share.  In Licenciado Cantinas, Bunbury, along with his band "Los Santos Inocentes," experiment with new sounds, like tango, rancheras and cumbia, yet never losing that authentic sound of rock and blues.  I am not the biggest Bunbury fan persay, but from the narrative and innovative point of view this album left me overwhelmed. Especially since it's a cover album and Bunbury tweaked each song with a special touch

3 songs worth listening:

  1. "Chacarera de un triste": The first couple of songs are much "Bunbury-like" gloomy and mystical.  Once you hit this track, the mood changes.  This is the first track to grasp my attention due to its flowy energetic interpretation of the Argentine folk music, chacarera mixed with strong electric guitar riffs.
  2. "El Mulato": The first few minutes of this track begin with that mysterious and elegant blues melody that only someone like Bunbury know how to deliver.  Mid-way into the track it merges to this eclectic solo of percussions and bass in a mumble-jumble of sensual latin jazz.
  3. "El Solitario David Hip": I am a sucker for cumbia, so when I heard Bunbury's version of the classic "El Diario de un Borracho," I flipped.  This is a clever surprise, since he did change the name to "El Solitario David Hip."  Bunbury's version is more mellow compared to the original cumbia beat.  Nonetheless, it is as captivating and makes you want to dance as Aniceto Molina's live version.

This album makes me want to: Recondisder my love-hate relationship with Enrique Bunbury's music.

Other albums you would like:

  • Tributo a Heroes del Silencio/Enrique Bunbury - Hechizo
  • Tributo a Caifanes/Jaguares - Nos Vamos Juntos
