In a time where fuzz and distortion is the sound du jour, Tribes gives a finger to this trend with instruments tighter than a virgin.

The Camden (London) quartet's debut album Baby is set to make them one of the British stand-out bands of the year. Any other year prior to 2000, this synth-free, sharp sounding, classic 4 piece instrument set-up band would have been a drop in the bucket but since we're in a lo-fi, shoegaze, chillwave bandwagon, these guys are a breath of fresh air. No they're not innovating anything, on the contrary some people might say they sound like a Pixies, Pulp, Dandy Warhols rip off, but at the same time that's ok because the Pixies, Pulp, and Dandy Warhols are the bands we grew up on. Truth be told, any more 90s sounding and it would be released on a cassette tape ...I get the feeling that this is a double edged sword.

3 Songs Worth Listening To:

  1. "Sappho" - Britpop bounce with Dandy Warhol romanticism, an edge of Alt, and classic cooing. This should have been in the Empire Records soundtrack.

  2. "We Were Children" - uhhh, same description as above but slower.

  3. "When My Day Comes" - hhhmm, the same but with more bounce as "Sappho"

This album makes me want to: listen to alt/britpop/grunge music that was actually made in the 90s.

Other albums you would like:

  • Pixies - Surfer Rosa

  • Oasis - Definitely Maybe

  • Dandy Warhols - The Capitol Years
