Retablos, culture, covers and more.
Grammy-winning artist, Lila Downs, is reminiscing Mexican culture, music, and art in a 14-track production titled Pecados y Milagros. The fierce Mejicana introduces us to new meaningful lyrics and experimental sounds in this one-way trip to Mexico. She also has her own clever interpretation of El Buki's "Tu Carcel" and Lola Beltran's "Cucurrucucu Paloma." Pecados y Milagros was inspired by the contemporary form of Mexican art called Votive paintings. The stories, myth, and legends found in these paintings were transformed from canvas to music with that extra special touch of Lila Downs.
3 Songs worth listening:
- "Pecadora" has a soulful and romantic beginning which then blends into a hyperactive fusion of quick accordion and percussion sounds with a flair of urban and gypsy influences.
- "Solamente Un Dia" is a warm and tender love song. In this track, Downs leaves behind the rancheras and experiments with bachata. She acculturates the genre with a soft touch of jazz and synths.
- "Zapata Se Quedo" is the perfect way to cerrar con broche de oro! Think sounds from Peru, think Mesoamerican flutes, think Colombian cumbia. Think Lila Downs and Celso Piña in an attractive sonora called "Zapata Se Quedo."
This album makes me want to: Change my major from journalism to votive art.
