If you have not heard of the Zizek “cumbiatron” movement out of Argentina by now, you are not doing your modern music homework. But if you have, then you know that King Coya is one of the most prolific representatives of this wave of talented musicians who manage to adapt South American folkloric rhythms with walls of electronic elements that clash and coexist
producing some of the most innovative music to come from south of the border (way south!) in recent years. “Cumbias de Villadonde” compiles King Coya’s (AKA Gaby Kerpel) recent tracks, remixes and collaborations with sounds from a collage of artists such as musical goddess Petrona Martinez, Cucu Diamantes (Ex- Yerbabuena), Los tucanes de Tijuana, el Gato Munoz and others. Remarkable tracks include “Villa Donde”, “Cumbiatron” and “Un nino llora en los montes de Maria + El Hueso” remix done with the most profound respect to the Colombian soul cumbia… from an electronic perspective.
Released under the ZZK Records label, “Cumbias de Villadonde” is definitely a must have. Be sure to check out other artists from this label such as Fauna and Douster, who are taking this unique sound around the globe these days.
It’s all in the mix baby! And as King Coya writes on the album art: “No ser purista, eso si que es bueno…
Amen, che!
