This is the third album of the Chicago based band, and in stereotypical album chronology tradition, this third album shows the band has matured.
Clearly, OK Go has had enough time to realize that it is ok to step out of their happy sound bubbles and that experimenting is totally welcomed. We have to to thank Dave Fridmann for this.
Why you ask?
Well, he was Of The Blue Colour of the Sky's producer, and his curriculum includes The Flaming Lips, and MGMT. With this is mind, it is great to know that he taught OK Go a sonic a lesson or two.
While on previous album's OK Go stuck to their safe goofy sound + creative video formula, it mainly got them recognized more for their videos. This time around they struck the right chord as this album is filled with proper ups and downs in excitement and melancholy.
Colours kicks off with a very groovy 'WTF', and continues with the funky drum beats until it gets to 'Needing/Getting,' whose opening is all about the guitar. Then there's 'Skyscraper', which takes it down a notch giving off a very chill vibe. It's the first track that really shows the sound fluctuation on this album. You easily come down from the chill vibe, however, with 'White Knuckles' (my favorite track). It is the catchiest tune of them all, and it makes you want to bust some funky moves without requiring a dance floor. The last song to take note of is 'Last Leaf' which graces your ear with a very flowy melody, and really makes you realize that these guys have expanded their horizon.
Very well done.
