Straight from the pacific coast of Colombia to our MP3’s comes a family full of aspirations, new rhythms, and a style like no other, Choc Quib Town (CQT). It is a no brainer why this fresh and lively trio was a Grammy nominee for best new artist.
Miguel “Slow” Martinez, Carlos “Tostao” Valencia, and Gloria “Goyo” Martinez form the Choc Quib Town family. The Colombian trio has been compared to The Fugees but their originality and use of reggae roots, hip hop, and Colombian folk makes them authentic and stands out from any other group, including The Fugees. “Oro” is CQT’s first production, where listeners have the chance to absorb exactly who Choc Quib Town is and where they come from.
CQT lyrically express personal situations within themselves and their country. The first two tracks “De Donde Vengo Yo” and “Somos Pacifico” are great introductions because in less than 9 minutes they tell us their roots and background story. “Mi Musica” is a track that specifically deals with their style, their fans and non-fans, and everyone who supports them. In “Alguien Como Tu”, CQT leaves behind the hype and shows off their sensual side. Whether it’s the crude reality or a positive outcome, they make sure to portray their message in a fuse of vivacious beats. Tracks one to 16 are linked in an engaging and addicting way, it’s an album that gives great meaning to the name, “Oro”.

If you are in the Miami area, you will have the opportunity to catch CQT in their US debut presentation on Friday, March 5th. at Kukaramakara (60NE 11ST, Downtown Miami) Sharing stage with also Grammy nominee Locos por Juana, it’s an event you would not want to miss. If the album sounds this great, I can just imagine the buena vibra live.
