Part of the New Rave wave (CSS, Klaxons, Sunshine Underground, etc) that flooded dance floor's speakers 3 years ago; New Young Pony has finally delivered a follow up to Fantastic Playroom with their self-produced The Optimist.
If you're familiar with Fantastic Playroom you know that while it did have hits like 'Ice Cream' and 'The Bomb' the album itself was pretty descent. While it didn't have particular success in the charts, dance floors were all about NYPC, and if you ask me that counts even more. This time around The Optimist is a better album, but only slightly.
As the first track, 'Lost a Girl', starts off you immediately realize that they've injected their sound with darker synths, and the vocals in the chorus leave you a little shoegazed. A lot of The Optimist is composed of this, but of course, it holds some sweet the-NYPC-that-we-remember sounds. 'Dolls' for example changes the vibe with its spunkier beats and acceleration-sound. 'We Want You' also has dance floor potential but only if properly remixed, and then you get to 'Before the Light' and you find yourself wanting to change the track because it's kind of a bore.
So all in all New Young Pony Club has found themselves in the middle of dark shadow sounds and electro highlighter beats but it hasn't blended properly. They should have just picked one and stuck to it.
