If Marie Antoinette had laid her eyes on MGMT, her lavish parties would have been even more extravagant and grandiose. Oh what a vision that is. However, if they would have been based off of Congratulations, her fetes would have gone from vivacious dance parties to lets-sit-in-the-couch-and-stare-at-the-pretty-lights driven parties.
See, MGMT's new album and Oracular Spectacular are worlds apart. Besides having synths, trippy keyboards, and shifty beats, they have nothing in common. While Oracular was wrapped in an irony world of superstar lifestyles, models, and dance melodies, Congratulations brings them back down to Earth, showing the true side of 2 guys that like to chill and not live the crazy super star life.
While 'Congratulations' has proven to be a love it or hate it album, I feel that I'm more in the neutral side. Opening with 'Its Working', the sounds goes back to the 60's yet manages to sound post-punk at the same. Confusing, but it makes sense. Then going back to the lollipop mod sound, and sticking to it, is 'Song For Dan Treacy'. Sounding even more post-punk, 'Brian Eno' is probably their fastest song, and even then it doesn't get you up and going to the dancefloor. Overall, Congratulations is a pretty decent album. There really isn't much to say about it, it's more of a living room listen. No, "living room listen" is not a terrible thing, it's what happens when you're a dreamy state of mind, which is ironic because this album is about them stepping out of their dreams, which is ironic because their first album was about their high-life dreams....
