A decade after Gotan Project is founded we find that this group keeps getting better and better like wine. Tango 3.0, their new album, shows their way of keeping tango alive by mixing it with jazz and electronic beats. From the cover of the CD we can see there's something more sensual about it… if that's even possible. You will also notice how Gotan decides to step back from the dance-floor where they were completely successful and go back to the more traditional sounds of Argentina.
Some collaborations throughout the album make this album completely exquisite and worth listening to. Take for example "Tango Square" which is the song they use to present the album with the collaboration of Dr. John on a Hammond B3. A smooth jazzy sound where you can start to feel the tango slowly blending in and preparing you to whats on the other tracks.
There's also author Jules Cortázar who reads from his romantic novel "Rayuela" which is the name of the second song. This one is a little more up-beat and the tango is even more present. By the time you get to "La Gloria", tango takes complete presence and even allows electric beats to blend with it. This one already has a video which we recently posted on the site. What's special about this one in particular is the collaboration of the famous football commentator Hugo Morales, who proclaimed the historic second goal of Maradona against England, only this time he proclaims Goooooooooootan.
Another song that caught my attention was "Mil Millones". It begins with the sound of a train that approaches and as it gets closer that sound starts to morph into a Batucada beat. Genius!
As I said before on this album there's some jazz presence specially on "De Hombre A Hombre" that translates "From Man to Man". When I listen to this song I can't help it but think about a back alley with dim lights and three men arriving on a limousine, just like a movie. There's lots of jazz on this song and very little tango accompanied by a small dialog on the back which makes it mysterious.
To close the album, we have "Erase Una Vez" which translates "Once Upon a Time", a romantic song that slows down to a mellow mode once again. This is the song with the most lyrics from the whole album.
This CD takes a second run through to taste all the details and special sounds that the collaborators brought to make this album a masterpiece.
