It took Maldita Vecindad eleven years to release another album, the wait seemed eternal but it had an end and a name: Circular Colectivo. "Colectivo como la música popular, de todos para todos. Colectivo el circular hacia la paz, la justicia y los sueños"…, - Maldita Vecindad.
The perfect music for a block party. I heart it.
Circular Colectivo is composed of thirteen tracks in which Maldita Vecindad experiments with ALL sorts of rhythms, such as cumbia, electronic, mambo, African and Tropical beats and even dark gothic sounds. Despite this blend, los Malditos never ever neglect their ska prototype in this album.
One of the first songs that I favor is Quinto Patio Ska. The first time I heard this song was at my first Maldita Vecindad show back in 2003 and I remember looking for this song all over the internet. To my surprise, this authentic song is track number two on the album and despite the seven year gap; the constant exhilarating beats took me back to two-thousand-and-three and reminded me why I couldn’t get this song out of my head.
El Pais De No Pasa Nada, Corrido para Digna Ochoa, and Sur Del Sur, among others, are songs that relate to social issues. The album as a whole has lyrics that dominate social content, mainly targeting Mexico but in which any culture can relate to because of the injustice and lack of awareness. As Maldita Vecindad let it be known, this album is the fusion of paz y baile.
Don Ernesto y su Jaimaca sound and Danza Lunatica are the only two singles that have no lyrics. In Don Ernesto y su Jamaica Sound you will overcome a combination of splendid guitar, piano, and güira solos intertwined in a smooth-blues-jazzy-lounge sound. Yeah, that’s exactly what it is. Danza Lunatica is just that … 4 minutes and 48 seconds of mainly drums and sax that will intentionally make you dizzy.
The track I find myself listening to over and over again is Y Asi Seguir. I love the moral of this track and even more the rhythm, it is pleasing to the ear. This is the song that makes me sum up that this album is the perfect music for a block party.
In Circular Colectivo, Maldita Vecindad are musically diverse and aware than ever.
This album is a celebration of their 25 years of musical career.
