Following Humo de Tabaco (2004) and Agua del Pozo (2007), Alex Cuba introduces his third studio album. This Cuban-Canadian knows the meaning of good music and this album proves it once more.
The album is self titled and is composed of 13 fresh tracks. It is not your ordinary Latin album, it's more than that, obtaining African roots, jazz, pop, funk, and rock.
"Directo" is the somewhat fast paced opening song, it is called "Directo" because the message is simply that, a direct message that aims straight to the heart. One of the slower-paced tracks is the last track, "Contradicciones", a song that any hopeless romantic can relate to. I wouldn't like to compare it to a workout, but that's what the tempo in songs one and thirteen provoke me to think, a warm up and a cool down, and everything else in between, the work out.
When I think of Love song, I think of some cheesy saxophone song from the 80's (ie: Careless Whisper - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4EW5f1IANI) or something you would listen to on Romance 106.7. In my humble opinion, "Hoy Para Siempre" is a nice song you can dedicate to that special someone without scaring them away.
Alex Cuba is influenced by songwriter Pablo Milanes and those influences can be clearly heard in songs such as "Solo Tu", where Cuba cleverly portrayed the connection between his lyrics and his guitar, just like any Milanes song.
All in all, this production is well done, tracks like "Gira", "If you give me love" (the only english song in the album), "Vida", "Tierra Colora", and "En El Cielo" are the reason I have had this album on playback for more than month now.
The album is already available in Canada and will be released in the US on June 8th. http://www.alexcuba.com/
