Daniela Spalla is an Argentinean artist that brings us MAGMA a 4 song EP with the collaboration of singer Ximena Sariñana.
Why an EP? Spalla says that to her it made more sense to give a taste than to make an entire album and according to her more organic. Seems a bit on the safe side to me, and not risky enough to brake through an already explored genre.
She mentions some of her influences like Fiona Apple and Regina Specktor, but to me she is more like a Julieta Venegas or a Natalia Lafuorcade but without the hint of regional/folkloric music that Venegas and Lauforcade have. I am a huge fan of the fusion of old school and new trends and Spalla seems to fall into new trends that sound great but are not new sounds. Her unsubtle lyrics are the typical letters to an ex-boyfriend whom she probably now hates, and is using letter therapy to cover the loss. The perfect example is Arruinarmelo, which I enjoyed and laughed a lot at the lyrics but yet again the beats felt a bit in replay. Even better, Me Pones Agresiva Como Pocos is great song for those annoying ex-boyfriends that insist on coming back to our lives just to mess up everything.
Personally I think that Spalla has the potential for something more risky. She has a great voice and the Apple/Specktor influences can be taken to the next level, on the other hand we have her live shows where she has a strong performance and we miss this on the studio recorded EP. However, she deserves kudos to an impeccable production!
