They're being called "the next Phoenix." and yeah I can see why, but they're not quite there yet.
This French duo originally called themselves Poney Poney but now go by the name of Jamaica (thank the Lord!). They have the instrumental value that Phoenix offers from being a band, and the electronic dance-punk sensibilities that Daft Punk originally came with, as well as some room for growth.
Their debut album, No Problem, was just released but they have already been causing quite the stir in the blogosphere, and once you hear it you'll know why. No Problem's formula consists of scratchy riffs, thumping basslines and a laid back vibe. Opening up the debut is "Cross the Fader." It's electric backbone gives a frantic need to dance, while the bass guitar and drums make you want to chill out. "I Think I Like U 2" feels like a sweeter continuation of "Fader" with a more New Wave style. It's a summer romance anthem in the non cheesy you-make-me-wanna-barf way. Slower songs, like "Short & Entertaining" and "Secrets" aren't as energetic, yet they still make your feet tap to the beat all along. Secret's chorus just makes you want to sway and jam out. Perfect for a car ride.
I can see how some people might feel like their listening to the same song/different words (It's how my mother feels about The Strokes), but if you take a good listen, you'll see they all have something unique about them. It's like the songs are in the same color family, but carry different tonalities. With this said, the comfort that they've taken in the style shouldn't be done again or it'll just be a drone. If they break a spectrum for their next album they'll be set.
